Incredible Hulk #622 Review

Incredible Hulk #622

Hulk vs. Zeus and only one will stand. Today I will be reviewing Incredible Hulk #622. Please leave a comment to let me know what you think.

So let’s talk about the book. Hulk takes on Zeus in a hand to hand battle while his Hulk family battles a Kraken. The battle is fierce and vicious but in the end Hulk falls to the power of a god. He is chained up and left for dead to be eaten by vultures. Luckily Hercules and his family comes and rescues him. Hulk has failed to receive the mercy of the gods. Meanwhile, in the Savage Land, Miek, from Planet Skaar and Hulk’s betrayer, begins to make plans. And that’s the book.

So let’s talk opinions. First of all, this book is infinitely better than the last dozen or so issues for one reason. No back-up story, Finally, the main story has a front row seat with no pages lost to a useless poorly drawn tale. This issue was intense. I actually thought that Hulk stood a chance but I should have known better. This new incarnation of Zeus will not be messed with and does not suffer fools lightly. The battle between the god and the monster were excellently drawn. Huge splash pages showcasing the strength of the Hulk and how feeble it is next to the power of Zeus. The chaining was a nice touch as was Herc’s rescue. I love the direction this book is now heading. Hulk in the Savage Land cutting loose on dinosaurs should be awesome. I can’t wait. That’s my opinion folks. Take it or leave it.

Pros Cons
NO BACK-UP. Titanic action and good plot progression. Nice art.

I think this issue did a lot of good. It along with the previous one showed the Olympian gods to be power hourses which is something has been sorely lacking. Pak himself is guilt of this thanks to a long history of having guns pointed at gods (Hera, Hephaestus, Hebe, and Neptune), “Hulk vs. Hercules: When Titans Clash” having Hercules be the only hope for Olympus and causing Zeus to tremble, Neptune’s mysterious depowering, etc. It showed that Pak can let the Hulk lose and have a bad showing which is a common complaint. It lowered the Hulk some so it is easier to threaten him since he has been acting like he is at WWH levels including healing factor for a long time. It showed the Hulk won’t give up even when he is faced with overwhelming power which is not something that happens a lot. It even included a reference to Prometheus, Frankenstein: the Modern Prometheus, and Hulk’s connection to that with the channing and Hercules rescue.

One thing I’m not sure of is what did Hulk hope he could accomplish? Even in the best of moods Zeus is not known for being a reasonable or benevolent god. He tends to be short-tempered, arrogant, and not kine to grant favors unless a lot of begging is involved or you happen to catch him in a rare giving mood. He respects bravery, but usually only from other gods. He has always looked down on mortals. So what did Hulk think he could accomplish by climbing Mt. Olympus and challenging Zeus other than piss the god off? Did he think Zeus would somehow be impressed or maybe honor the Hulk’s sacrifice?

Oh, what do you think of many Hulk fan’s taking issue with the Hulk losing a fist fight even to someone as powerful as Zeus?

Thank you for your comment. I tend to think that this was yet another Hulk attempt to save his family. It showed Banner’s determination to take away the monsters from the ones he loves no matter what the cost. I was positive he would lose the fight because a god is still a god. If the Hulk fans thought he should have won then they are simply unrealistic. Hulk is still at WWH levels of power but he just has Banner’s brain to calm the Hulk’s rage. That makes him even more dangerous. I still think it would be moronic to threaten the Hulk, especially after this issue. If Hulk is willing to fight a god, think of what he’ll do to a normal person. Hulk is not one to mess with. Period.

Does anyone know if they came out with a graphic novel of this story because I get my books from the library and I picked up planet savage and it collects #623 to #629 and I don’t understand I read the graphic novels when they come out maybe I should try and get a subscription but the Dark Son story graphic novel does’nt come out till november and that collects #612 to #616 it does’ntmake sense why put out one ahead of the other.

Guess that makes me the "all over the place" reviewer. A title which I claim with pride. I am a happily married man of almost 10 years living in Brooklyn, NY with my wife and two amazing boys. I hope you enjoy my opinions and I look forward to reading and responding to any comments or criticisms.
