The New Justice League Ladies & Gents!

Via several sources a new image of the forthcoming Justice League has surfaced. The regulars are in attendance – Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg – but there are a couple of sneaky appearances as well.

On the left there’s Deadman, The Atom, Firestorm and a mysterious woman (the popular rumor is Element Woman from Flashpoint)

On the right is Green Arrow, Hawkman, Mera (Aquaman’s wife) and again, a mysterious woman (the one directly to the right of Cyborg). Black Canary or Power Girl were popular guesses for awhile but Geoff John’s himself quoted, “That is not a blonde. (No one’s guessed the characters correctly yet.) [Perhaps the most interesting element to the image is the inclusion of Element Woman who made her first appearance in Flashpoint #1. So…I guess Flashpoint will indeed matter.

He says “characters” as in “no one has guessed teh characters corectly yet” … I would think this must refer to both the two mystery women, therefore suggesting that the one on the left everyone assumes is Element Woman is, in fact, not Element Woman. Which means Flashpoint may not matter as much as you think (though it obviously matters as it seems to be the catalyst for the reset/reboot/relaunch ala Crisis’85).

Flashpoint matters because as I see the story moving, Flash will try to set things right, try to set the timeline back to what it was, but he can’t possibly know everything that Reverse Flash did. No way to completely remove all of the damage, not to mention that his intervention is, in itself, a change that causes it’s own unpredictable outcomes (the so-called butterfly effect)

When he does “undo” the Reverse Flash’s alteration of the timeline, he only manages to get certain things back, and in the end, he will likely have no choice but to just accept these things because continuing to change it in an effort to make things right will just change things further.

I am curious to see how all these changes in New Earth’s timeline will affect the multiverse. I am now really looking forward to the DC Relaunch/Reboot, but more so than that, I am also looking forward to the Grant Morrison Multiverse event/series, because I think we may see some very interesting returns of figures from the pre-Crisis DC universe, like Infinity Inc, the JSA, and a world where Captain Marvel is the undisputed greatest of all super-heroes. I just hope DC is willing to explore these worlds. Maybe as the initial reboot line is paired back we can see an Earth-2 imprint, an Earth-S imprint, etc. Even if it is just one title from each.

My only fear is that DC will make the big mistake many people make when they try to gain “new and younger audiences”, because young does not mean dumb, and dumbing down stories to some perceived younger level could be their downfall.
