Kick-Ass 2 #4
So let’s talk about the book. After the horrid death of one of their own, the guys in Justice Forever are depressed, but still hopeful that they can continue their good deeds. Hit-Girl wants to go to war and kill Red Mist and his people because she feels that Kick Ass and his crew are too soft, but her stepdad forbids her from doing anything. Meanwhile, Red Mist goes to war. He finds out where Katie, Kick-Ass’ girlfriend lives and goes to pay her a visit. He brings his crew of psychos and killers. They start to shoot up the neighborhood, killing anyone they see. They break into Katie’s house, kill her father, and gang rape her. When the cops arrive, they unleash Mother Russia, a former bodyguard of the Russian prime minister, on the unsuspecting cops. She goes to town on them with her automatic weapon and kills them all. This leads the cops to call for a statewide ban on all costumed heroes. All of them are arrested and taken into custody. When they arrive at Kick-Ass’ home, his father pretends to be Kick-Ass and gets arrested in his place, all to protect his son. And that’s the book.
So let’s talk opinions. Holy shit. Seriously. I haven’t said that about a comic in a long time, but this one definitely deserved it. There was absolutely zero restraint in this issue. No one was spared. Violence and cruelty was the definition of the book. For the sake of comparison, think Crossed with more hatred. I can’t believe the pure rage and disgusting things that Red Mist unleashed on Kate and her neighborhood. This is the pure definition of a villain. While most comic book villains threaten to do bad things, Red Mist really delivered here. He truly solidified himself as a homicidal maniac and a cruel calculating evil son of a bitch. I did think that Millar went a bit too far with the killing of the children and the way that Katie was assaulted, but I guess that was the point. Top that off with the incredible character of Mother Russia, and I finally feel that we have a dangerous enemy. She really rocked this issue. The pacing this issue was totally break neck. I was riveted from beginning to end. I’m now sure that the only way for Kick-Ass to win this battle is if Hit-Girl joins in. The rest of the people on his team are totally delusional nice guys who just want to help. Red Mist has trained hardened violent killers. Somehow, Hit-Girl is going to have to disobey her stepdad and unleash some havoc. The art this issue was unrelenting and held absolutely nothing back. If anyone other than Romita was doing it, I’m sure it would have been more enjoyable. (There I go Romita hating again) Still, the violence was in full display. The other amazing thing about this issue was that it actually came out on time. That’s right people, only one month has passed since issue #3. If this wonderful trend continues, we can actually finish this series in time for Christmas. What a great stocking stuffer for those near and dear in your hearts. I can’t wait for issue number five. That’s my opinion folks. Take it or leave it.
