Young Justice: “Failsafe” Review

The team steps up as the Justice League gets in trouble.
S1: Episode 16: Failsafe
Finding a lone ship at Superman’s Fortress of Solitude, our heroes attack, their usual costumes now replaced with white polar camouflage. The team takes some of their own losses in the fight before managing to get some alien tech incorporated into Miss Martian’s bio-ship. The team meets General Eiling after they pull off a last minute rescue of some of the military, and also long time Batman supporting character Jason Bard (perhaps this is where he picks up his limp). On the plus side, they manage to figure out that the ships are not actually disintegrating their victims, but rather teleporting them away.
After a lot of cameos (including Rocket, Red Arrow, Zatanna, Bette Kane, Barbara Gordon, and Alfred), the team infiltrates the alien ship, losing Superboy in the process. After a lot more chaos, we eventually learn this was all just a training exercise that went wrong, becoming more realistic than was thought possible. As everyone puts themselves back together, Batman and J’Onn confer, and J’Onn reveals that what went wrong stemmed from Miss Martian, and that she is the most powerful telepath he’s ever encountered, stronger than he is.
What I liked and what I didn’t:
The cameos were great. It was nice to see Rocket again, if only for a moment, and Icon rated a mention. I’m really hoping this means Static will eventually show up. The team’s determination to do good no matter what came through, even in this doomsday scenario. This was also the first time Meggan told Superboy she loved him, deepening that bond.
From the start, I was saying this was some kind of alternate reality or something. So many deaths right off the bat really meant either dream, alternate reality, or time travel fix in the works. There really wasn’t another option there. Aside from that bit, it was a great episode.

I liked how when Robin strapped the bombs to his chest it made him look like Red Robin and his utility straps…very subtle.
