Avengers: X-Sanction #2

So let’s talk about the book. After defeating his enemy in the battle with the Lethal Legion, Iron Man tries to hail Captain America but doesn’t get any response. When he sees a lone Redwing flying in the sky, he follows the bird to Cable’s boat. That’s where Cable gets the jump on him and the two battle. It goes back and forth until Cable uses some future trickery to shut down Iron Man’s armor. Without that advantage, Iron Man is defeated by Cable. He puts him into another inhibitor chair. Cable needs to know how this chair as well as a bunch of other anti mutant tech got into the Avengers hands. He starts pumping him for information when he is shot from behind by Red Hulk. Already weakened from his earlier battle, Cable is no longer able to resist the TO virus that is slowly killing him as the virus covers his entire face in metal. And that’s the book.

So let’s talk opinions. So this issue was definitely better than the last one. For one thing, we had a bit more words to read. Which actually made a story start to appear. I loved the comparison that Hope made about Cable’s origins and Hope’s. I guess that is why Cable feels so close to Hope and why he would do anything to protect her from turning into him and having to suffer the long and painful life that he has. Other than that, this was just another step in the road to Avengers vs X-Men. (Coming in 2012 to a comic shop near you!!!!) It seems that Hope will be the main focus of that crossover/event. Maybe the Phoenix is coming back and Hope is the intended host. Maybe Hope is Jean Grey reborn. In any case, that speculation is for next year. For now, we generally have a nice display of the cunning and tactical skills of Cable. Maybe I underestimated him. He outfought Cap. He really outsmarted Iron Man. So I guess next issue he has to outmuscle the Hulk. Doubtful, but with the TO Virus fueling his strength, maybe a possibility. From what I read, Spider Man and Wolverine will also be targets in future issues. That should be fun to read. Loeb definitely has some skill when writing sarcasm and comedy so that issue will be one to look forward to. For now, the whole back and forth present/future stuff is all right. I just wish there was a bit more being revealed other than the Avengers had tech to kill Hope. I want a secret villain that set this thing in order. Something to justify this ass-kicking. Cable is just a concerned dad while the Avengers are in the wrong place at the wrong time. In the end, this whole mini just might end as one giant misunderstanding. At least the art is still awesome. Plenty of nice splash images that really look cool. (Especially Iron Cable standing menacingly over Iron Man, repulsors charged and ready) Backgrounds are non existent, but the characters are definitely done incredibly well. The action is also well laid out. With such large images and short writing, the pacing on this book is incredibly fast. That’s one of the good things about the future interludes. It slows the book down for a second or two and makes it seem longer than it actually is. Hopefully next issue will be even better than this one and we get a really nice Rulk/Cable battle. Considering the history between Rulk and Loeb/McGuiness, it should be a familiar read. I’m looking forward to it.  That’s my opinion folks. Take it or leave it.

I think it’s certain that Hope is the Pheonix. Mister Sinister said as much in Uncanny X-men #3. In it, he also set up the reason for the possible Avengers vs. X-Men, namely that the Pheonix is dangerous to mankind (although of course it was all a little cryptic). Also of interest would be the ads that feature Wanda Maximoff (responsible for the large loss of mutants around the world) behind Hope (a possible rectification of what Wanda did?)

Thanks for the comment Brett. I actually didn’t think of it that way. Wanda might have created the possibility of Hope as soon as she said those three little words that decimated the mutant population. If that is the case, then Jean might not be coming back. (Boooooo!!!) Damn Wanda and her stupid magic. I WANT JEAN BACK!!!

I agree, bring back Jean! I think it would also help as a plot device for future writers that wanted to reunite the X-Men. Jean can be the anchor for Cyclops to bring him back from the brink.

I have been a comic collector and reader for 25 years. My major comic love is all things Marvel with the X-Men being at the top. I also dabble in anything and everything that catches my eye. Guess that makes me the "all over the place" reviewer. A title which I claim with pride. I am a happily married man of almost 10 years living in Brooklyn, NY with my wife and two amazing boys. I hope you enjoy my opinions and I look forward to reading and responding to any comments or criticisms.
