Favorite New Comic Characters of 2011

Legacy is part of what makes comics great; some of these characters have continuity older than our grandparents, but part of what keeps the industry and stories fresh are new characters. Good guys, bad guys, main or supporting characters each year brings new names and faces, some of which are more loved (or hated) than others.

Our new characters category includes any individual or team of characters that were introduced in 2011.

The Worthy | Geoff Arbuckle

Say what you will about Fear Itself, but “The Worthy” was an awesome visual concept. Imagine the gods of Norse mythology to be something more twisted and monstrous. The Worthy seemed to more or less too powerful on an individual basis, but as a unified front for the Serpent, the world was nearly cast completely into shadows, and later after Odin prepared his army to raze the planet to depower his brother and put an end to him once and for all.

Court Of Owls | John Barringer

Kicking off Batman volume 2 after DC’s relaunch with a secret criminal organization was risky (not being that far removed from a recent similar organization) but paid off huge; the Court of Owls was original, creepy, and kept us guessing. And although they are a new addition to DC’s Universe in 2011 they’ve, technically been around for as long as Gotham itself, they’re a classic mystery wrapped in more mystery. Aside from Synder’s writing style and the phenomenal art team the Court of Owls, and their assassin Talon, were arguably the greatest catalyst to what made Batman such a great book. Kudos too for making owls so freaking creepy.

Super Dinosaur | Dan Cole

A T-Rex with a robtic exosuit and rockets works on a completely visceral level.

Raizo Kodo | Victor Kutsenok

We’ve had vampires in comics before. We’ve had Dracula show up multiple times. Yet this little vampire, with the long history that is yet to be fully revealed, came on like a house of fire in 2011. Dominating the page with every appearance, Raizo’s legend grew exponentially each time he graced a comic book with his presence. He started solo, then gained a team of vampire followers. His past is still a mystery. He was one of the few highlights of Fear Itself tie ins. He is the reason, at least for me, that vampire stories are cool again. I hope he gets a regular series soon as it would be nice to get the horror genre back into Marvel. He is the only new character introduced in 2011 that I even remember or care about. I can’t wait to see more of him.

Power Man | Wayland Smith

He was a new take on an older character, who took the name knowing at least some of the history that came before. Despite his brashness and the way he started, he also showed the potential to become a great hero in time, and I loved that Iron Fist was teaching him.
