Batman: Earth One Gets Release Date. No Really.

DC Comics has announced an official release date and solicitation for the long-time-coming original graphic novel, Batman: Earth One.
It wasn’t released when originally planned, around the same time as Superman: Earth One.
They haven’t done two novels a year, as planned.
And it doesn’t look like it’s going to be released, as planned, with the Superman: Earth One sequel (set to come out in November?)
But it is coming. This July. On the 4th.
144 pages at $22.99. That’s $3 more expensive than Superman: Earth One with 8 more pages. And the announcement came with some solicitations:
• From GEOFF JOHNS and GARY FRANK, the acclaimed team behind SUPERMAN: SECRET ORIGIN and the SHAZAM! stories in JUSTICE LEAGUE!
• In the tradition of SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE, this spectacular original graphic novel gives new insight into BRUCE WAYNE’S transformation into BATMAN and his first year as THE DARK KNIGHT.
• In this all new take on the Batman mythos, Bruce Wayne is on the hunt for his parents’ killer. His target? The Mayor of Gotham City!
• Plus, who is Alfred Pennyworth – and why is he so determined to put an end to the Batman?
Everything points to a completely different and new take on the Batman mythos; which if it really happens will be very interesting and a departure from Superman: Earth One which was a bit of a bust in the “were doing something different” department (my opinion of course).
And “who is Alfred Pennyworth” and “why is he so determined to put an end to the Batman?” THIS I cannot wait for.
Sidenote: DC tried to pull a fast one on us by including in the solicitation something that hasn’t even happened yet (Shazam! stories in Justice League)
If you haven’t already, check out the preview and watch out for July 4th.

I really enjoyed the SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE book. This could be interesting. Just never know with Geoff Johns. Sometimes, I love his stuff (HAWKMAN, BLACKEST NIGHT, DAY OF JUDGEMENT). Other times, I just don’t feel it (JUSTICE LEAGUE, GREEN LANTERN, ACTION COMICS, FLASH). Also, I’m Batmaned out. Then again, I really love big long superhero reimaginings (There used to be a lot with ELSEWORLDS.)
I absolutely loved Superman – Earth One . . . Don’t know why, but i totally believed everything it said in terms of why Clark chose to be a reporter in an age where first person camera phones tell us everything we need to know. Implying his farm boy upbringing made him immune from the seduction of wealth was just a cop-out . . . and blatant pandering to middle america.
I can still see why people didn’t like it, though. But frankly, Earth one was still MILES ahead of Secret origins . . . That should’ve been called “Smallville, the comic book”. I mean, everything about it was meant to either fit nicely into or appeal to fans of the CW show.
Which is why i’m VERY concerned that the Secret Origins guy is writing Batman Earth One. I honestly thought Geoff Johns was one of the better wirters at DC with his work on JL & Blackest Night . . . but phew, Secret Origins was offered nothing new.
