Wolverine and the X-Men #7
So let’s talk about the book. Quentin and Wolverine are confronted by casino security but manage to fight their way out of trouble. They are about to escape with their unfairly earned gambling winnings when Wolverine is blasted with some energy blast, making them drop their winnings. Quentin puts him on their spaceship and they head back to earth. Unfortunately, the ray did something to Wolverine. Meanwhile, back on Earth, the alien that has come to kill Broo has him at his mercy. Broo, however, responds with some logic and has a conversation with his would be murderer. Turns out that tghe killer is actually a scientist and wants to kill Broo because he is a scientific anomaly. Broo resists as Kitty comes to his aid. Inside of Kitty, Beast manages to find the source of the infection and cauterizes it. This causes Kitty to vomit them up, and allows the alien to knock Kitty out. Broo, seeing this, gets enraged and brakes his vow of pacifism and assaults the alien viciously, ending the battle. And that’s the book.
So let’s talk opinions. What a great ending to an incredible little story arc. I really enjoy this book so much more than Uncanny X-Men. That might change soon with the return of Chris Bachalo, but as they say, nothing lasts forever. Oh well, no sense dwelling on a terrible future. Let’s focus on the present. This issue was a multitask masterpiece. Jason Aaron had the difficult task of telling three stories in one issue and he managed to do it perfectly without taking away anything from any one tale. He gave each piece the focus it deserved and tied all three tales up very nicely, even leaving a few questions hanging to be addressed in future issues. I love the alien’s origin and back history. It was a nice surprise and added a bit of logical humor to the book. Speaking of humor, the exchanges between Deathbird and Iceman were hilarious. I was a bit surprised that she didn’t know who he was. I’m positive the two have faced each other in the past so that was a bit of a mistake on Mr. Aaron’s part. I’ll forgive him, though since it was probably the stress of the situation that made her forget. I was not too happy with the Wolverine/Quentin arc ending. It felt hollow and forced. I’m positive, that with AvX coming, Wolverine’s issue will be fixed with almost no overall effect on the story, which makes the ending to this issue kind of a waste. I also liked the added mystery to the Bamfs, or whatever they are. I hope they do get addressed soon since they are really one huge continuity hole and I hate those. What do you guys think they are, cause I personally have no clue. I like the love triangle that was introduced this issue, but I’m not sure Kitty should be doing that to Peter. Especially in the mentally unstable frame that he is in. Lastly, let’s talk art. Another masterful success here. Great layouts, nice action scenes, crystal clear distinguishable panels. (Enjoy it while you can folks. It all goes to mush upon Bachalo’s return) Overall, an awesome book and definitely the better title of the two new X books. That’s my opinion folks. Take it or leave it.
