Avengers Assemble #2 Review

The new Zodiac has revealed itself. Now it’s up to the Avengers to stop them in Avengers Assemble #2!
Avengers Assemble #2
The members have been empowered by a cosmic entity in order to remove powerful objects that “have no business being on Earth”. Meanwhile, Hulk arrives at Avengers Tower to speak with Captain America about his encounter with Aquarius. In Latveria, Thor, Iron Man, Hawkeye and Black Widow get thrashed by Taurus. They still are able to extract what it was Taurus was there to get and when they return to the Tower, they discover he was trying to steal an ultimate nullifier when they are suddenly attacked by the rest of of the Zodiac.
Right away, I did find one thing that bothered me a bit about this issue. The Zodiac are not unknown to most of these Avengers, yet they don’t bat an eye at the creatures they’ve encountered that are wearing symbols of the Zodiac. Granted, this new incarnation of the Zodiac is much different than what they’ve faced before, but still they don’t seem to mention that this could be a brand new form of the same team they’ve dealt with. In fact, the last time this was seen was as recent as Secret Avengers #5. They may still bring up that they do indeed know what the “Zodiac” is as an organization, but it can irk a longtime reader pretty quickly.
All that being said, this book is still what I’ve long looked for in an Avengers book. It’s exciting. It’s fast paced. It’s got a lot of eye candy. Yeah, I’m not pleased with the ignorance to “Zodiac”, but this book is still a lot of fun to read. Not only that, it is absolutely gorgeous. It feels like Mark Bagley was born to draw the Avengers. I don’t care if this series lasts only an arc, or a year, or two years, but I hope Bagley is there for the long haul.

| Still very fun to read. The quick pace is welcome and Bagley’s art fits the Avengers to a tee. | The Zodiac is nothing new yet the Avengers seem to ignore them. |
