ComiXology Lands Marvel Comics

ComiXology recently announced a multi-year contract with Marvel Comics where “it will exclusively distribute single issue English-language digital comics” So the biggest comic publisher finally [kinda] hooks up with the biggest digital comic retailer.
So check and mate.
Marvel Digital Media’s GM, Peter Phillips said…
“As the industry leader, Marvel is committed to growing the comics market through digital innovation—and bolstering our existing partnership with comiXology continues that,”
“This agreement is a huge win for current and future fans of the Avengers, X-Men, Spider-Man and Marvel’s entire library of exciting characters.”
ComiXology CEO said…
“We’re extremely proud that Marvel has chosen comiXology as its partner,”
“Our expanded relationship will foster increased innovation and accelerate plans for more points of distribution and reading. I’m more than thrilled.”
No one has yet commented on the actual length of the “muli-year” deal. And the contract does not seem to include collections (i.e. graphic novels).
The contract (which was actually signed on May 1) strategically happens just before June, the date Marvel has picked where all $3.99 comics will include a free digital code.
Already the biggest kid at recess this contract solidifies comiXology’s near-monopoly in the digital comics realm, and depending on the length of the deal it makes anyone coming in and competing in the near future seem a huge uphill battle.
Not really bad news – I’d prefer one place to make all my comic purchases rather than spanning my digital library through several apps.
The most interesting quote of the whole thing, the “after the credits” scene if you will came from comiXology CEO David Steinberger while talking to TechCrunch…
“We’ll be working closely with Marvel to ensure their branded experience is a unique experience. It will be different than the DC Comics branded experience.”
Curious to see what that’s going to look like. Hopefully not just different logos and colors.
