Batwoman #11 Review

To Drown The World finally concludes.
Batwoman #11
We are here at the end at last. This current arc has been frustratingly below average as we have seen Batwoman come up against the mystical Medusa organization. The ending doesn’t do much better as it still has the problems the previous issues have had.
What does work, as always, are the character moments. J.H. Williams III and W. Haden Blackman conclude the Jacob story in a touching manner. It maybe a little too saccharine for some readers, but it is a welcomed happy ending. Having Bette back also means that there will be a lot of potentially interesting and emotional storylines the two writers can focus on in the coming months. There is also a nice moment between Kate and Maggie that wraps up their development as a couple for this arc. It is a well staged scene and adds yet another layer to both their characters as they share a few past secrets.
But those two moments are the only ones that carry any interest within the book. Although the arc is finished the Medusa storyline continues. Amazingly this narrative leaves us at the same place the story began, which is maddening at best. The tease of yet another hidden master is trite and the only interesting thing about the cliffhanger-esque conclusion is the implied absence of the Medusa organization for the time being. Maro continues to be utterly dull as she monologues her way through the issue. This in turn makes the action beats fall flat due to a lack of an interesting antagonist.
Trevor McCarthy continues to present the narrative in a clear manner. He never seems to add any real interesting visual moments, but he gets the job done. As always with his work his forced overtly manipulated layouts are present.
So, there is a great sense of relief that this is the final part to the current arc. Hopefully Batwoman will get something interesting to do, which matches the solid character moments that are peppered throughout the issue. Goodbye for now Medusa, you will not be missed.
