Cover of the Week: February 3, 2010
Every Wednesday I pick my favorite cover from all the comic books that came out during the week…today’s pick goes to Stefano Turconi’s cover to Disney’s Hero Squad: Ultraheroes #01 (Cover C).
I know, I know, I know…it’s somewhat cliche to do an Action Comics #1 cover but I can’t help it, I love them. Far more than just the start of Superman is represented in that one image, and when replicated it’s always fun to give it a closer look and examine other artist’s take.
What makes Disney’s Ultraheroes #1 different from the rest, and what surprised me the most, was the choice to keep the setting in a late-1930′s environment. The most common recreation of Action Comics #1 is to “update it.” Some examples include Superboy #1 or Amazing Spider-man #306, but here we have a classic 30′s Goofy lifting the car with other elements such as the title font and style also representative of the original. Stefano even went as far as to age the look a little with a coffee stain and some photoshoped wear and tear. BOOM! Studios is making a bold move by including some “aged” characters such as Goofy in their comics but you have to appreciate their resistance to update them. Goofy will never be as hip as Peter Griffin or Bart Simpson but he’s timeless. And to see that respect given here, plus one of the truest recreations of Action Comics #1 I’ve ever seen…well…it just makes for a great looking cover.
Weirdly enough Buffy the Vampire Slayer #32 also was an Action Comics #1 cover that came out this week. Had it not been for the classic-feel we got in the Goofy cover I would have gone with that.
And not to keep talking about the honorable mentions but the cover to Blackest Night: Wonder Woman #3 might just be the best looking Wonder Woman I’ve ever seen. Good Lord. Thank you Greg Horn.
