The Black Masks’s true identity coming in Batman #693?

Over at DC’s The Source Batman editor Mike Marts updated the blog and listed some of the things that scare him. Along with Tony Daniel and Grant Morrison’s Pink Flamingo character he quoted, “BLACK MASK. His true identity scares me. Stay tuned.” His comment was followed by the picture below….

Batman #693 Black Mask Teaser

When I went to save the pic the file name read as follows, “bm69306_100.” Doesn’t take the world’s greatest detective to figure this out. bm693…Batman #693? So November 11th we’ll see who that was sitting in the dark during Battle for the Cowl?

Batman-BattleForTheCowl3-Page10-1DC has been trying so hard to be tricky as of late with somewhat failed results (Dick Grayson become Batman, Tim Drake become Red Robin, Jason Todd again with the Red Hood, Stephanie Brown the new Batgirl…no real surprises here) but this looks to be a doozy. Catwoman killed Roman Sionis right? So who could it be? My guess…

I don’t know. But I have a crazy far out guess.

Two-Face makes the most sense from the above teaser, with the double personalites and all but we’ve seen them together. Maybe another Ventriloquist (again with the double talk). The Joker is always a possibility given his absence of late; however, I think he’s being reserved for Morrison’s run. My deep sleeper (fantasy football talk)…False Face. The guy had white hair (via the white chick in the photo above), he uses his make-up skills to impersonate other people, and the original Black Mask’s gang name? The False Face Society. It’s a stretch but for the sake of flexing my geek muscles that’s my call. If DC REALLY wanted to scare us though we’d get Bruce Wayne back here. Not going to happen though. I have better odds of tripping over a new Mac someone anonymously left for me at my doorstep when I get home. Just please…please…don’t make this Roman Sionis back from the dead. That would just add to the list of disappointments.

Batman #693 comes out November 11; make sure to come back for the review.
