Booster Gold #22 Review

Booster Gold #22 Booster and the Titans versus Deathstroke cover by Dan Jurgens and Norm Rapmund

Booster Gold #22

Here we are on Dan Jurgens second issue back since his break, Booster Gold #22.  To be honest I was a bit torn when I saw that DC had listed this issue as being written by Keith Giffen, but found that it was actually written by Dan Jurgens.  While it would be odd to have a guest writer come into the middle of an arc for just one issue, I find that Jurgens dialogue is a bit dated sometimes or just falls flat.

This does not mean the plot suffers though. Jurgens posits an interesting timeline in which The Teen Titans fell in their first fight against Deathstroke and the first Ravager.  Though we only get to see brief flashes of this new timeline, I couldn’t help but be intrigued by the ideas he put forth, one being a Green Lantern-era Sinestro as a member of the Justice League.  As you can guess Booster’s job is to team up with the classic Wolfman Titan’s lineup and protect them from destruction, while Rip tries to find out who’s behind all this.

The art in this issue was great, with Dan Jurgens showing that he could effectively capture a few different time periods and Wolfman’s Titans.  The fight towards the end felt a bit rushed though.  Then again I might just be used to Deathstroke’s fight scenes from Identity Crisis or Outsiders #19.

Overall though I felt this issue deserved a 7 out of 10.

The Blue Beetle story is still a a great example of fitting a well told story brimming with humor and action into an eight page story.  Picking up after the last issue Blue Beetle’s fighting off a small army of robots intent on destroying the human race.  The feel of the story is somewhat reminiscent of those old Superman cartoons from the 1940’s with an updated look and dialogue.  Dan Jurgens might be able to learn to build a mystery from this issue without having the main villain hiding in the shadows.

The art in this issue is well done, though I have one complaint.  Creating a new character is hard work.  I understand that, but drawing a character that looks so much like Danielle Garrett that it actually throws the reader is not a good thing.  I honestly thought Danielle was in the story for half the book only to find out that it was someone else.

New character aside I found this to be an enjoyable read and I hope that DC keeps these mini-comics coming.

I give it a 7 out of 10
