Blackest Night: JSA #1 Review

The first issue of the Blackest Night Tie-in mini-series Blackest Night: JSA hit stores on last Wednesday, and is sure to leave any fan entertained. While the story doesn’t do much to advance the Blackest Night storyline, it does expand the event, and also shows us a look into how DC’s first superhero team is dealing with the nightmare that is Blackest Night. This issue features the writing of James Robinson, and the pencilling of Eddy Barrows, both of whom worked on Blackest Night: Superman together. Anyway, let’s get on to reviewing!

The writing by James Robinson is very emotional. The issue is very emotion based, but then again so is all of BN, and Robinson does a great job at giving the ol’ heart strings a tug. Robinson made this issue with just the right intentions: to take lesser-known characters and add depth to their background, origins and current relationships. This issue does enough for character development to be worth it’s cover price while also providing a good story that readers will enjoy.

The art, pencilled by Eddy Barrows and Marcos Marz, inked by Julio Ferreira, Luciana Del Negro and Ruy Joes, and colors by Rod Reis, is amazingly sleek, crisp, and raw. The Black Lantern’s look amazing with their decaying anatomy and rotting flesh. Barrows and Marz provide a great visual to go along with Blackest Night and also show their amazing composition skills. They pick great angles to draw from, they arrange the panels in a way that makes sense and is interesting, and they do a great job putting realism in their drawings.

Overall, some of the highlights of this issue are its great art, great layout and great writing, while the lowlights are it’s white borders between panels, whichtend to draw you out of the story.
