Ryan Reynolds is Green Lantern in the new movie!

Ryan Reynolds is Hal Jordon, Green Lantern of space sector 2814, in the new movie due to hit theaters next year according to EW.com’s article.

Should this surprise anyone? Not really. The guy is coming off a commercial success with his role as Deadpool in the latest X-Men movie, he’s young, popular, chicks dig him, guys hate him (because they want to be him), and without a doubt can convey some of the cockiness that comes with Hal Jordan’s character.

I don’t know how to feel about this exactly. A selection like Ryan Reynolds immediately reminds me of a Val Kilmer pick for Batman or Hale Berry as Storm; take a popular hot actor and we’ll sell tickets (which, by the way works despite ticking off readers) and scares me because previous movie selections like this have made for great trailers and posters but not-so great movies; which have a knack for sacrificing character development and story for slow motion explosions and fighting (Electra for example). In general though I think we owe it to Ryan Reynolds to hold judgment. Lets see some footage, photos, or story before getting too worked up.

I remember hearing about Heath Ledger for Joker and doing a big, “Wha”? Or when I read Ron Perlman was our first Hellboy, Elijah Wood as the infamous Frodo Baggins, and most recently Zachary Quinto the new Spock (who I’m not a fan of). What do all of these guys have in common though; they were awesome picks. And as guy who just finished getting caught up with Geoff John’s run on Green Lantern I gotta admit…I think Hal Jordan would think it’s cool they got a big movie star hunk like Mr. Reynolds to play him.

See…it’s closer than you thought

So now that we got the Hal Jordan role filled I wanna know who else is on slate to show up? Guy Gardner? Green Arrow? Alan Scott (oh please, oh please, have some Alan Scott in there; wishful thinking probably). No matter what happens, next summer were getting a new Green Lantern movie, directed by Martin Campbell (ever see Casino Royale?), and if WB has learned anything from the new Batman franchise we could be in for some tragedy and darkness, given the scale they have to play with Hal.

For now, reserve your judgement and don’t be afraid. That’s what Hal would want.

Not sure how I feel about this. Like you said, it seems a little too Hollywood-ish. Wasn’t he in consideration for the role of the Flash for a long time? I think that would have fit him better. He’s got the funny, smart-guy part of Hal. But I don’t know that he has that old school tough guy aspect, like in New Frontier. Oh well.

I don’t think that Ryan Reynolds is going to be Green Lantern…. First because the Deadpool spinoff movie is coming, and he can’t be two superheroes, from each company! And also, Ryan Reynolds is more of a funny guy than anything, and the Green Lantern really isn’t a comedian… So i think the guy from Star Trek will be him… thats wat I heard

    HORRIBLE!

He was my choice for Flash until he did Deadpool, and I dont agree with people doing 2 diff. heroes, so I changed my pick to Dane Cook.
The only thing he shares with Hal is cockiness (Hal was pretty cocky at first), if anything, they should have him play Guy Gardner, he’s the comedian of the Lanterns.

ever consider the fact that most actors don’t like to play the same type of role over and over again. I mean Ryan reynolds looks like Hal (in a way), has played some serious roles, and is a good actor. This is how you guys reacted when Heath Ledger was cast as the Joker, just give Ryan a chance before you start to critisize him

Well Anne, I made these comments a long time ago, and have since came to peace with the fact that Reynolds will play Hal, and have even grown quite fond of the idea. The more I have thought about it, not only do I think Ryan will do a good Hal, I am also just thankful a GL film is being made in the first place.
