Ms. Marvel #47 Review

Ms. Marvel #47

Ms. Marvel #47

Ms. Marvel #47 is a bit of a throw away issue.  Gone is the excitement of the recently ended “War of the Marvels” arc.  Also, Sana Takeda, the lady behind the gorgeous art of the previous issue, is not on this particular story (the art is done by a trio of artists headed by Mike McKone).  Overall, this is really the first time I’ve been let down by Brian Reed’s series.

That said, this issue isn’t a total waste.  Of course, after a big arc like “War of the Marvels”, it’s not uncommon for a series to have a bit of an interlude before the next arc.  That’s pretty much what’s going on here.  We’re just waiting for next month’s showdown with Mystique…

The subject of the issue is a date that Ms. Marvel owes everyone’s favorite web-crawler, Spider-Man.  The origin of this goes back to issue #37 of this series when Spidey, at that time wanted by S.H.I.E.L.D. for being an unregistered vigilante, helped Ms. Marvel capture some baddies.  Since Carol is freshly resurrected, she thought now would be a good time to take Peter Parker out for dinner as his thank you for that previous stories assist.

It’s not that this issue is really all that bad.  Is it a let down?  Sure.  However, is it entertaining?  Sure thing.  These two characters really have no real common ground or anything to talk about.  It’s just like every other awkward first date I’ve ever had minus the superpowers.  They do get attacked by a couple rogue H.A.M.M.E.R. agents who want to bring Carol in so they can get some promotions within Norman Osborn’s twisted organization.  The issue does end on a nice, happy note with two people who’ve known each other for a long time just enjoying a chili dog on a rooftop.  They don’t expect a relationship with each other and we’re not tortured with any ambient sexual tension between two people who really don’t belong together.  Soooo…  Overall, it’s just nice.  Nothing more, nothing less.

Even though I don’t really have any problems with the art team of Mike McKone, Rob DiSalvo, and Derec Donovan, I am so excited to see Sana Takeda returning in December and will be working up to issue #50.  Unfortunately, the giant sized #50 will be the end for this series.  My guess is that Siege will have something to do with that.  There’s a death hinted at around the same time as the end of this title.  Brian Michael Bendis is penning it, so you can lay your money down it will be a female death.  Oh god…  Is Ms. Marvel going to die AGAIN?!?

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATING

ProsCons
Nice little story... Nothing too fancy.Since nothing is too fancy here, there's nothing to exciting or particularly great about it either. Like I said, it's just a nice little interlude for the final art.
