The Mighty Avengers #32 – Powerful enemies and I love it!

Dan Slot keeps the big-time baddies a-comin’ in this newest arc.  After taking on the most powerful Inhuman ever, there’s no rest for the weary as the Mighty Avengers get called into action by the Scarlet Witch (who we already know is Loki in disguise) to go to a H.A.M.M.E.R. facility to take down yet another A-level villain, the Absorbing Man.

It’s bad enough that Crusher Creel is rampaging through a facility full of goodies that any bad guy would want to get his hands on, but the team also must work beside Norman Osborn’s Avengers.  The stark differences between the members of each team lead to some entertaining moments.  My favorite of those moments is Hercules calling U.S. Agent a tool for saluting Osborn and telling him how much of an honor it is to be working with him.

Remember when I said this facility has a bunch of stuff that a bad guy would love to get his hands on?  Well, with Absorbing Man’s power being that he can become whatever he touches, just think how excited he is when he finds a portion of the Cosmic Cube Captain America recovered in an old mission.  This looks like a tough situation even for two Avengers teams.

I understand that some people may find this series a little hokey.  But I look at this as a throwback to the way comics used to be written.  This isn’t too far off from the style of writing Kurt Busiek brought to the Heroes Return Avengers.  These guys aren’t grim and gritty like the angst-ridden New Avengers.  These Avengers save the day with smiles on their faces and they don’t waste time sitting around chit chatting about whatever is on Bendis’ mind.  I think Herc said it best when people were sitting around talking about whether or not they should trust the Scarlet Witch…  “Enough talk!  To battle!”

I believe I’ve written before about the Avengers being “sunshine heroes”.  Those are heroes who always know they are going to win despite the odds.  As long as they are going into the situation with people they implicitly trust, they cannot be defeated.  Hank Pym has led the way with  this type of thinking on his new team of Avengers.  Pym’s confidence has made him more than just that whacked out wife beater.  As he likes to remind everyone, he’s called the Scientist Supreme now.  He’s driven and leading the team almost like Captain America would and that’s a change that I’m really enjoying.

ProsCons
This series continues giving a team of Avengers real threats and this issue is certainly keeping up with that tradition. Some may find dialog hokey.
