Too Many Comic Book Movies?

captain marvelAs my fellow staff writer John has previously reported here, Geoff Johns (along with Bill Birch) is set to write the screenplay for a Shazam/ Captain Marvel movie. He has already been confirmed as writer the Flash movie for Warner Bros. and I got to say I’m sure he’ll do good work with both films and stay close to the source material. But because we keep hearing about all these films being made by Warner Bros. for DC characters, I’m sort of over it, we are always hearing rumors about all these comic book films that might or might not see the light of day, I kind of don’t really care anymore.

I get the feeling that the information for these movies get released on the net way before they should, when the films are still just little ideas of the writers, directors, producers, whoever, which makes me think who actually leaks this stuff? The market place for comic book movies is going to be vastly over saturated very soon. Some have been great (Iron Man, Batman Begins/ Dark Knight) but a lot more have been really bad (Wolverine, Superman Returns, Catwoman…I could go on).

guess what I’m saying is that I don’t get too excited anymore when I hear about a new comic book movie being made (or might be made). Do you think we’ll ever see Green Arrow: Supermax of whatever the fuck it’s being called now. I’m not so sure, but no doubt we’ll have a Superman reboot again soon, we’ve also got loads coming out from Marvel over the next few years and while I know I should be looking forward to most of them films, based on previous experience, more often than not the films are awful and I wish I hadn’t wasted my time or money. I sound a bit bitter and sure I’m not going to love every comic book movie, or hate every one, but the way thinks are going I’m caring less and less either way. I just think it makes the industry look bad when every other bad movie is based on a comic book.
So guys, agree or disagree? Are there too many comic book movies now being made? Do fans still get excited about the announcement of the next comic based adaption? Do fans care any more, or am I on my own here? Please comment and let me know.

It’s definitely becoming an oversaturated market. I personally think Supermax will be a cool idea, but I can also see it quickly being watered down to nothing more than a prison escape flick with a couple powers being used here and there.

Ethan Van Sciver recently made a point where he basically said that the comic book writers and artists do these great books, then go see the movie and say, ‘whoa, that’s how it should be done,’ then go back and take stuff from the film, ie black suits for the x-men, spiderman’s ability to make webs without the use of a device, etc. and push it in their comic.

I like the fact that the movies attempt to bring in new readers, but not when it causes a reboot or lowering of quality just to catch up a few new readers.

    • Good points there Andy. I sort of concentrated on the negative parts and forgot, like you said, that movies are a great way to grab new readers. One of the first movies I remember seeing is Chris Reeve’s Superman and that helped me fall in love with comic books as a kid. For that reason alone more comic book movies could be seen as a good idea but your also right that we dont want the quality of the work to drop

  2. Most the time a comic book movie is hinted at I get excited just because it’s potentially another outlet to digest something that I love; however, I agree that a ton of leaked info can give out false impressions or overhype something not ready yet to be hyped.

Not to mention that because of the nature of comics some potentially awesome stories/characters are given a more light hearted touch to appeal to more ticket buyer (i.e. parents for their kids). I mean how many freaking Stan Lee appearances do we have to get before it’s not cute anymore, or taking a guy like Silver Surfer and putting it into an almost comedy.

I’ve kinda had it too…unless it’s thick with source material or looks more grounded I’m not giving in anymore. I still haven’t seen Wolverine, Transformers 2, and GI Joe and I frankly have little interest.

    • I think your spot on John about how certain stories or characters get toned down (and even dumbed down) in movies for the family audience, which is a shame. I have’nt seen Transformers 2 or GI Joe yet either, I’m sure I will eventually but like you said, there is very little excitement for me anymore, its not like I HAVE TO SEE THAT MOVIE THE NIGHT IN COMES OUT, like I had to with Dark Knight, I was confident in that movie, which is exactly what I’m trying to say in this article.
Thanks for the great comments guys

I dont think there are too many comic book movies; but too many bad ones have been made. There is too much ‘dumbing down’ as one poster mentioned. Just stick to the story and it will be fine. These stories are timeless for a reason.

Do we really need another quasi-homosexual superman? Do we really need spiderman dancing a chorus line mid movie? Does the fantastic 4 HAVE to be fighting a creampuff doctor doom? They should have called him ‘doctor sort-of-dangerous’.

Hellboy gets the royal treatment but DC cant get superman right????? WTF? They need to take ques from JLU animated, characterize him according to that and run with it.
