The “Big Two” get a lot of press but comics wouldn’t be what they are today without that other [roughly] 25% market share. Some of comics greatest books and characters were/are independently created and despite their volume they are the nuts and bolts that keep the industry fresh and original. From grimy noir or horror books, sci-fi space dramas, fantasy epics, comedy gut-busters, or coming of age nostalgia independent comics know no genre boundaries and aren’t promised tomorrow – which is just one of the reasons they are so great.
Our favorite independent books category includes any comic book series from 2011 not published by DC or Marvel.

Today, Footprints creator Joey Esposito and indie press publisher 215 Ink came together to release a statement that’s very exciting and encouraging news for any self-publishing comic creator.

Not too long ago, I reviewed an indie comic called Footprints by Joey Esposito and Jonathan Moore. I later interviewed writer Esposito and talked about the project a little more. On top of all that, Joey and Jonathan launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise the funds and appeared at C2E2 in Chicago back in March. The Kickstarter campaign got off to a great start, but now, the creators are looking to ensure their project gets made. So, lucky you, here’s a chance to read issue one of Footprints!

A few days ago, I was lucky enough to review Footprints #1 by writer Joey Esposito and artist Jonathan Moore. Mr. Esposito was kind enough to take a few minutes to answer some questions as he prepares to debut the book at this year’s C2E2 event in Chicago. Joey’s got a few interesting points of view about the comic industry. He’s not only a writer and creator, but he’s also the Comics Editor for IGN – one of the most trusted sites for all things geek. With the monstrous cast of Footprints and him being connected to IGN, I had about a million questions to ask. Thankfully for all involved, I narrowed the list down to twelve questions that I felt got to the heart of his work and his feelings about the comics industry as a whole (plus a brief insight on how he feels about the state of the human condition to boot!). So, let’s put the bright lights on Joey and get started with the interrogation, shall we?

Whether you believe in them or not, the legends of Cryptozoology certainly evoke a sense of wonder in children and adults alike. We’ve grown up on stories of Bigfoot, the Yeti, the Jersey Devil, and certainly wondered at the possibility of the true existence of the Loch Ness Monster. Joey Esposito and Jonathan Moore’s Footprints doesn’t just presume the existence of these mythological monsters, they assume it. Not only that, but they are nearly accepted as useful members of society. Making it’s debut at this year’s C2E2 event in mid-March, and shipping later in March, I was lucky enough to take a look at issue #1 of the new series.
