Becoming a Fan of DC Comics: Geek Life

For the 20th edition of Geek Life, I decided that I would talk about the things that finally got me to buy comics from DC.  I grew up on Marvel and, to this day, still know far more about their characters and history than I do DC.  It’s not like I never bought any DC Comics when I was a kid, it was simply that I wasn’t as much interested in those characters as I was Spider-Man or the Avengers.  So, let’s see what got me interested enough in the “other guys” to give their books a read, shall we?

Welcome back to Geek Life!  We’re 19 episodes in, and if we count the number of my articles as if they are years, they still don’t equal the number of years my topic has appeared on television.  In twenty-two seasons, The Simpsons have given us everything from laughs to irreverent comedy to quotable lines to perhaps the most recognizable family in the world.  I’m not kidding…  Show me a picture of my mom next to a picture of Homer Simpson, and I’m going to acknowledge Homer first.  Seriously.  So, stick around, hop on that couch, granted it doesn’t run away from you or make bad things happen to you, and let’s start from the very beginning, shall we?

Conventions: Geek Life

Welcome back to another edition of Geek Life.  The number 18 has always been my favorite number.  I have no clue as to why but there was always something kinda cool about it.  That being said, my 18th installment of Geek Life is a very special one.  Not only will I be talking about a very special part of my life to coincide with my favorite number, but stay tuned for a very special announcement at the end of this particular installment.  So let’s get started…  It’s time to hit the biggest part of any geek’s Summer – oh yeah, it’s time to talk about Conventions!

Crossgen Comics: Geek Life

Welcome back!  ACB’s Geek Life keeps rolling along.  For our seventeenth installment, I thought we’d take a look at something that on paper seemed to really be what the comic industry needed, but somehow, the will of the top dog in charge just wasn’t enough.  I’m talking about CrossGen Comics in its original days.  Since I have a lot to talk about here, let’s get right to it, shall we?

Comics Grow Up: Geek Life

Welcome back to the sixteenth installment of ACB’s bi-weekly Geek Life series.  With my birthday coming at the end of this week, I’m constantly reminded I’m a thirtysomething comic collector.  Since I am already feeling a bit older, I figured it’s as good a time as any to talk about those comics for grown ups.  In this article, we’ll look at the horror comics of the 1950s that were marketed to kids, but contained several mature themes.  Then, we’ll talk about the revolution of Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns, and the rise of DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint.  Lastly, we’ll see what effects that had on comics of today like Robert Kirkman’s acclaimed The Walking Dead.  So, as long as you’re over the age of 18, I guess we’re ready to begin!

My Comic Book Obsession Part One: Geek Life

Welcome back to ACB’s bi-weekly trip through the past.  For this thirteenth, and final, retrospective on the 80s, I decided to get a little more personal with you.  This episode is all about discovery and falling in love.  It’s a quest of epic proportions for one boy who, one day, picked up a little book of paper and ink and found a hobby that would change his life forever.  This is the story of how I became obsessed with comic books.

Batman (1989): Geek Life

Movies are a huge part of our everyday lives.  We quote them.  We pay outrageous prices to see them and enjoy a Coke and popcorn while we sit in the darkened theater.  When they come out on home video, we buy them.  Back in the days when video stores were on every street corner, we had a hard time even thinking about going through a weekend without renting a movie or two.  How many times have you hoped to see a particular trailer when you go to a movie, or when you see a trailer, do you think that you just had to see that movie?

The Nintendo Entertainment System: Geek Life

October 18, 1985 is a day that changed every kid’s life.  It is the date that kids began to stay inside all day, even when it was beautiful and sunny out.  Stacks of books and comics suddenly found themselves unread and barely touched.  It was the day the Japanese released a brand new obsession for everyone in North America.  It was the day home video games leaped into the future.  It was the day the Nintendo Entertainment System hit stores, and that very video game console is the topic of the eleventh issue of Geek Life.

Do you ever wonder why gross out movies like There’s Something About Mary or Jackass got so popular in today’s culture?  I often have because I share a love/hate relationship with the gross out genre.  Part of me loves the silliness and shocking nature of them, but then the other part of me knows that loving it can lead to the ladies thinking you’re immature or, frankly, unattractive and I hate that idea.

Secret Wars: Geek Life

Welcome to the ninth installment of ACB’s bi-weekly retrospective, Geek Life.  For our newest romp through the fantastic decade for geeky awesomeness known as the 1980s, I decided to look at the 12-issue maxi-series that started something that is all too common these days in the comic book industry.  Of course I’m talking about Marvel Superheroes Secret Wars, and the phenomenon I referred to being all too common these days is the “major event series”.
