Power Girl #1 and #2 Review

Power Girl #1

Power Girl #1

To be honest, I didn’t think I would review this one. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying anything bad against the character or the creative team at all. I just figured the people who wanted it would have already bought it and loved it as much as I did and those who didn’t, well, wouldn’t.

The first issue of this new series confirmed what I expected. Simple, plain fun.

Writers Gray and Palmiotti do a quick recap on the character, deliberately ignoring all of the convoluted back history that’s recently been thrown out of the window, establish a current scene for her to exist in (with her office life) and give us a taste of what is to come with an attack by the Ultra-Humanite (always a favourite).

Artist Amanda Connor is considered a little too cartoony for some people, although I disagree. She  brings a fun range of emotions through facial expressions that are often missing in standard comics and in doing so really brings out the individual nuances of character.

Issue 2 cover

Power Girl #2

The second issue expands Power Girl’s world slightly by featuring a couple of members of the Justice Society, a team of which she holds the chairmanship. Flash, Doctor Mid-Nite, Hourman, Wildcat, Damage, Mr Terrific, Green Lantern and Liberty Belle all make a brief cameo but take no time away from the two majors, PG and the Ultra-Humanite. We are left with a cliffhanger of Power Girl having her head cut open as the Ultra-Humanite attempts to switch bodies yet again.

Overall rating: 9/10

ALthough I normally wait until a story is finished before reading (in floppies, not in trade), this is one book that will be read every month. I will also be reviewing this every month along with the standard Justice Society title, JSA vs Kobra and Magog (when it appears).

Thank you for reading.
