Darkwing Duck #15 Review

Darkwing Duck vs Launchpad McQuack for mayor of St. Canard as villains attack the city!

Darkwing Duck #15

In a personal bright spot for me amid a week of dismal DC final issues, Darkwing Duck continues to amuse. The mayoral race gets odd as Darkwing continues to run in large part from his unchecked ego, Launchpad opposes him in part so DW won’t give up being a hero, and the apparent villain’s dupe Constance Denton makes various public appearances, lecturing against both of them. There seem to be two powers at work behind the scenes here: one is a man drawn very devilishly who goes by Bob (Beelzebub anyone?), who seems to be manipulating everyone via a strange ink that gives people superpowers and makes them obsess about things, like the villains we’ve seen recently, Cat-Tankerous and One Shot.

The purple villain we’ve seen before makes herself known, calling her self Suff-Rage. She keeps popping up, now bringing back barely remembered villains from DW’s past (he even can’t recall one of their names, which was amusing) to attack them at what’s supposed to be the first debate of the campaign. At the end of the big fight on stage, she reveals she’s been making them fight illusions, and then uses some mind control power to turn the entire crowd against Darkwing to end the issue. Rereading this, “Bob” there might be Suff-Rage in disguise, since she seems to be adept at illusions.

Ok, I continue to worry about who Suff-Rage is. Last review here, I mentioned I thought she might be Morgana gone bad. Now, she’s demonstrated a very in-depth knowledge of Darkwing’s history, illusions, and teleportation. Sounds like magic to me. Magic plus knows DW’s history really sounds like Morgana. I really hope this isn’t her, but it really seems to me like it is.

What I liked and what I didn’t:

As ever, Ian Brill makes this book goofy fun. There are various Easter Eggs of Disney characters, a running gag here, and some good scenes of Darkwing in action against some of his most obscure foes. DW continues to balance raging ego and the desire to be a hero, slipping into ego but generally finding his way back. Lauchpad explaining why he is running against DW made sense, which I had kinda been wondering about.

The only negatives really are my concern about Suff-Rage being Morgana and not quite being clear if Bob is Suff-Rage, working for her, or someone else. Aside from that, great fun as usual.

I have been a comic collector and reader for decades now (wow that hurts to say). My major interests have been hero titles in DC and Marvel. At one time, I was co-owner of a small comic and gaming store, and at that point I read EVERY hero book coming out, Marvel, DC, Milestone, Malibu, and Valiant. I am pleased to have been asked to contribute here, for the moment on the Teen Titans title. I am a frequent poster on the DC Message boards, there under the name Kingsmythe. I hope you enjoy my posts, and feel free to ask questions or make corrections as needed.
