Legion of Super Heroes #3

The Legion of Super Heroes continues dealing with the odd alliance of Res-Vir the Daxamite and an entire Dominator invasion fleet in “Shadow War.” With some clever team work and creative power usage, they not only defeat Res-Vir and send the fleet into retreat, but manage to get Chameleon smuggled aboard the ships in disguise to see what’s happening back at their base. Back at Legion HQ, Brainy keeps up with his latest obsession, testing Glorith’s powers. Another group goes to Daxam to try and learn more about Res-Vir, while reinforcements finally arrive to let them finish the fight as I mentioned above.

What I liked and what I didn’t:

It’s nice to see Element Lad regarded as the major powerhouse he is which they certainly do here. Who else would you send for to stop essentially a bad Superman? The LSH made some good choices (which means Paul Levitz wrote well) in their two big guns, Mon-El and Ultra Boy taking on Renegade while the rest of the team dealt with the Dominator ships. Cham going undercover was a good idea as well, and very in keeping with his character. There was also a reference to the war with Darkseid, so it sounds like at least major Legion history survived the re-boot.

They seem to be making Shady not only less likable but less useful as time passes. In the last run of the book, pre-reboot, she had the inexplicable off-screen break up with Mon-El, then affair with Earth Man. Now, she passes out after keeping her darkness field up for a few minutes? What, it’s harder to keep more powerful people in the dark? That makes no sense.

It’s obvious. Shadow Lass is pregnant.

Loved the issue. Levitz really shined in highlighting a number of Legionnaires while still moving the story along.

    Thanks for the nice review.

I have been a comic collector and reader for decades now (wow that hurts to say). My major interests have been hero titles in DC and Marvel. At one time, I was co-owner of a small comic and gaming store, and at that point I read EVERY hero book coming out, Marvel, DC, Milestone, Malibu, and Valiant. I am pleased to have been asked to contribute here, for the moment on the Teen Titans title. I am a frequent poster on the DC Message boards, there under the name Kingsmythe. I hope you enjoy my posts, and feel free to ask questions or make corrections as needed.
