The Incredible Hulk #4 Review

Hulk vs an island of gamma irradiated animals, and an insane Bruce Banner. Let the smashing begin. Today I will be reviewing The Incredible Hulk #4. Please leave a comment to let me know what you think.

The Incredible Hulk #4

So let’s talk about the book. Hulk, Amanda Von Doom (no relation), and her army of hunters arrive at Banner’s island. Her purpose, to find Banner and kill him. Upon their arrival, they are assaulted by an army of hulked out animals. Still, considering how angry Hulk is, he makes short work of them, tearing them to pieces. He then leaps away to find Banner. Scouring the island, Hulk finally finds him in his lab. Banner has built another Gamma bomb. The two have a quick conversation until an enraged Hulk grabs Banner by the throat. Sill, for some reason, he cannot bring himself to kill Banner. Using this moment of hesitation, Banner smashes Hulk with some sort of Gamma powered glove he invented. The force of the punch is so powerful that the Hulk is propelled halfway across the island and knocked unconscious. Banner then goes out to finish the job. And that’s the book.

So let’s talk opinions. Honestly, I’m not exactly sure how I felt about this issue. First off, the writing felt off to me. There actually wasn’t too much story. Basically, Hulk shows up, kills some monsters, finds Banner, and gets bitch slapped. That’s about it. Pretty hollow if you ask me. Usually, with a weak story like this, we supplement it with awesome art or incredible action. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case here either. I love Silvestri and the way he did the Hulk in the first few issues. In this issue, however, he was off. The Hulk is looking more and more cro magnon. His jaw and forehead are getting more apish looking. His overall posture, hair and face are looking more gorillaish. In addition, there are way too many lines on everyone’s face. No one has that many wrinkles. At least his action layouts were slamming. Great to see the Hulk cut loose and bash up something. I just wish the story had some of the depth that last issue had. It really was non-existent. I did like seeing Banner further deteriorate into insanity. Also, the mentioning of the separation mystery was good since it kept me wanting to read for more clues. Hopefully, as promised by the last page caption, we will get a full disclosure next issue and see who was behind the split. I’m leaning towards the Leader for some reason. I also really hope that next issue we get a little bit more supporting cast interaction. Amanda needs to be written more into the story so we can get some sort of connection to her. I cared for about two issues. Now I’m losing all interest in her as a character. In general, the story has to pick up, or this might not be as successful a renumbering gimmick as everyone hoped. That’s my opinion folks. Take it or leave it.

FYI – Silvestri didn’t do the pencils for this particular book. Whilce Portacio did; I think he did a good job. I prefer Sylvestri, of course, but still…

I think this book keeps getting better actually. 1st issue was disappointing, but I like where it’s going.

Thanks for the comment Tommy. I didn’t notice that it was Portacio. I liked his art too, especially on the X-Men and X-Factor. I definitely did not like it this issue. I also liked the story the last two issues but this one was just slow. That’s how I felt.

Finally! This issue knocked it out of the ballpark!! This is what issue #1 should have been. Amazing amazing stuff. Here we get to the meat and potatoes and we care.

This review just outta be banned as an embarrassment to IGN.

The whole mole thing was ridiculous. Glad it’s over.

Portacio is dead-on with keeping this a “defined” Hulk, rather than a simple cartoon lined green monster.

Ms. Doom had better be left in dodge or make it a point as to why she is here. Just don’t bring back those stupid mole creatures. It’s so 50′s retro and not fantastical at all. Didn’t work for Joe Mad in Avenging Spider-man either. They didn’t shrinkwrap those comics for no reason! LOL.. I mean ever issue is because they know you just want to look at some Mad art cause their is NO story (and it’s not for a digital code). No story, no character arc… no nothing but some pretty pictures.

Thanks for the commend Bruce. Not sure what IGN means but I feel you are wrong about banning it since it is an opinion and I’m allowed to have it. I agree that the mole thing was ridiculous and I am also glad that part is over. Portactio’s Hulk is a pale comparison to Silvestri’s well toned, well expressed, correctly shaped Hulk. As for caring, personally I don’t. I still don’t. There is no story. Hasn’t been for four issues. Want me to sum them up for you? Banner and Hulk split. Banner is insane and creating hulked out animals. Hulk is hired to kill Banner. He accepts and goes to Banner’s island where he is slapped aside like a little red headed step child. The end. That’s story to you? That’s a pathetic joke to me. What exactly made this issue sooo much better than the last 3. At least those issues had awesome art to give it life. This issue lacked even that. I stand by my opinion and rating.

I have been a comic collector and reader for 25 years. My major comic love is all things Marvel with the X-Men being at the top. I also dabble in anything and everything that catches my eye. Guess that makes me the "all over the place" reviewer. A title which I claim with pride. I am a happily married man of almost 10 years living in Brooklyn, NY with my wife and two amazing boys. I hope you enjoy my opinions and I look forward to reading and responding to any comments or criticisms.
