Invincible Iron Man #513 Review

Invincible Iron Man #513

The Invincible Iron Man hasn’t exactly been invincible lately.  Things are about to get a whole lot worse for him.

Invincible Iron Man #513

Iron Man arrives in China to try to stop an army of Dreadnoughts.  He’s joined by the “Dynasty”, the Chinese equivalent to the Avengers.  They fight back the Dreadnoughts slowly but surely.  When Rhodey arrives to lend a hand, things look up until the Chinese Air Force arrives and orders them all to evacuate while they blow up a giant dam to stop the Dreadnought attack.  When Iron Man and War Machine leave, Rhodey tells Stark to come with him where he’s met by an escort of Detroit Steel mechs and a detail of soldiers who are to bring Tony back stateside so they can have a little discussion about his recent tabloid appearances.

The plot thickens as Matt Fraction continues to guide Iron Man into an ambush.  This time, Tony is led into an act of war against China that gives him all he needs to know about what’s been going on lately – Stane and the Mandarin are working together.  What he doesn’t realize is that the Mandarin has brought together nearly a dozen former Iron Man foes to begin his all out attack on Iron Man.

Here we are four issues into the story arc and we’ve barely got going.  That’s exactly why I like Fraction’s work on this series.  These first four parts have already been chock full of a combination of good plotting and good action.  However, instead of this arc starting it’s turn toward the last couple issues to wrap up the story, it’s kicking it into overdrive.  It’s still possible this will only be a six part arc and not slightly longer as I originally believed, but if that is truly the case, and we’re only a couple issues away from a finale, we are in for a hell of a next couple issues.   Regardless of what is left in this story, each issue of the arc has been slowly, but excitingly, building to the last page of this issue and it was a pretty awesome sight.

Fraction’s great plotting and action, coupled with Salvador Larroca’s fantastic art, has made this series soar over the past few years.  Now, we’re rushing headlong into a war between Iron Man and  some of his biggest enemies ever.  Needless to say, I’m really looking forward to what comes next.

Pros Cons
A lot of action, a great conclusion, beautiful art from Larroca. Not much negative to point out here.
