Wolverine #302 Review

Let the mind games begin. Today I will be reviewing Wolverine #302. Please leave a comment to let me know what you think.

Wolverine #302

So let’s talk about the book. As the battle begins, the mind ninjas use their powers and toxins to drug Wolverine and convince him that he is back in hell. Joining him are his kids that he killed during the whole Red Right Hand revenge story. Refusing to kill his kids again, Wolverine allows them to maul him. In reality, it is Mystique who is doing the damage by continually shooting Wolverine in the face. Meanwhile, Amiko arrives but is also affected by the toxins. When Shin, the new Silver Samurai, sees his girlfriend in danger, he finally succumbs to Azuma Goda’s wishes. Goda returns Shin’s armor to him and he proceeds to escape with Amiko. The two head to the hidden treasure chamber of the Yakuza clan, where Shin claims it for himself. Goda arrives and takes posession of it. As this happens, Wolverine calls upon his prior training with Rachel Summers and unleashes a personality trait that he has long hidden in himself. He lets loose the berzerker Wolverine who unleashes hell upon the mind ninjas and slices them all to hell. He then goes to Yukio, and makes love to her. Too bad she is really Mystique in disguise and Wolverine doesn’t sense it because of his crazed state and Mystique’s newly heightened powers. Back in NY, Kingpin orders an assassination attempt on Azuma Goda. Deathstrike accepts. And that’s the book.

So let’s talk opinions. I’ll be honest, when I saw the Wolverine goes to Hell landscape, I almost screamed in horror and disgust. That was the beginning of one of the worst Wolverine stories ever told and I was praying we weren’t revisiting the carnage. Top it off with the ridiculous Wolverine children story arc, also revisited, and I was about to tear the issue to shreds in pure hatred. Luckily, like Wolverine, I too was affected by the Mind Ninjas. Thank god that is was all a nightmare and Wolverine called upon the power of the berzerker to kick some serious ass. I hope this is not a recurring theme where Wolvie morphs into personalities from his past to deal with surrounding threats. I thought the purpose of comics was to create character growth, not devolution. At least the rest of the book was pretty cool. Mystique getting some vengeance was awesome. She has always been one of the most underrated characters in Marvel, I think. Her powers are incredible. She can be anyone and anything. She is partially ageless. She is a badass skilled assassin. What more can you ask of an enemy? Sabretooth was a bit of a disappointment this issue as he did practically nothing. Having Shin become the anti-hero for the love of his woman was pretty badass. I hope we see lots more of him in the future. Also, with the hit out on Goda, I predict an awesome ninja/assassin/samurai free for all next issue with carnage galore. Personally, I can’t wait. Great art too. Keep up the good work. That’s my opinion folks. Take it or leave it.

I have been a comic collector and reader for 25 years. My major comic love is all things Marvel with the X-Men being at the top. I also dabble in anything and everything that catches my eye. Guess that makes me the "all over the place" reviewer. A title which I claim with pride. I am a happily married man of almost 10 years living in Brooklyn, NY with my wife and two amazing boys. I hope you enjoy my opinions and I look forward to reading and responding to any comments or criticisms.
