The Fearless #12
So let’s talk about the book. Valkyrie has been struck dead. The Final Sleeper’s fear wave is covering the earth. Only Dr. Strange is left to defend the Earth. Using the tomes that he was given by Crossbones, Dr. Strange figures out hoe to stop the Sleeper and recalls Valkyrie back from the dead. She chooses to answer his call, after realizing that death does not offer her the peace and happiness she has always craved. With her come eight shieldmaidens who long ago pledged to Odin to contain the hammers. Velkyrie chops off the Sleepers hand that is holding the hammers and uses them and her enchanted sword to kill the Sleeper and expunging Sin’s soul from inside it. As the dust settles, the shieldmaidens take the hammers to the nine realms. Valkyrie returns to the all-mother, who decides to let her live and gives her a new mission. To form a new group of shieldmaidens made up of eight women from earth. Meanwhile, Crossbones, who fears nothing, takes Sin’s prone body and carries it away as her soul returns to it. They go to a secret location where they are met by Hellstrom and D.O.A. Together, they begin planning their next step. And that’s the book.
So let’s talk opinions. So the mini-series that was better than the “event” that spawned it has finally come to an end. As I expected, nothing was really changed in the general landscape of the Marvel Universe. The story was straight and to the point with no real hidden agendas. You got what you were promised. The Hammers were removed. Sin was beaten, but not eliminated. The big surprise, to me, was Hellstrom actually going to the dark side. (Though I really shouldn’t be. He is the son of Satan after all) Also, it was pretty damn cool that Crossbones withstood the Fear wave. He really is one badass Mother F@%#er. The action was pretty cool this issue. Valkyrie’s final battle was really well laid out and intense. Also, I liked the little background scenes with the Avengers slapping around random enemies. That was pretty funny. The art overall on this series has been consistently phenomenal. Really big, clean and colorful. Lots of really nice splash images as well. Unfortunately, this took away from story, but you can’t always have everything. I got what I needed and was completely satisfied. The ending was a bit uneventful and it sets up a possible new series where Valkyrie has to recruit a team of Shieldmaidens from Earth, but I personally will not collect that. It really holds no interest for me. Maybe if it gets a deeper story behind it, I’ll give it a look, but for now, I’m more than happy to put all memories of Fear Itself to rest. Overall, this was a great mini-series and I really enjoyed it. That’s my opinion folks. Take it or leave it.
