Winter Soldier #4 Review

Winter Soldier #4

Wow, this cover looks shockingly similar to issue 3 – the color pallet is identical.

Winter Soldier #4

Bucky and Dr. Doom head off to the United Nations to intercept the activated sleeper agent Arkady and the Doombot while the Black Widow has gone off on her own to check out an abandoned monkey lab.  Bucky and Doom cut through the exterior wall at the U.N. to surprise Arkady and the Doombot, and the fighting pairs off into appropriate one on one battles.  When Bucky’s gun explodes in Arkady’s hand, he is fatally injured, but does tell Bucky that “Lucia got what she needed from his robot,” which leaves Bucky asking Doom what exactly his robot clones are programmed to do besides impersonate him.  The Black Widow can tell the Red Ghost was at the monkey lab, but why and what the purpose was, she can’t figure.  Finally, Lucia and her posse arrive at Von Doom’s missile silo, where she reveals that she has obtained the launch codes from the Doombot.

There’s only one issue left of this story arc, so I guess we’re in the second act, but it doesn’t feel like it.  I just don’t have a great sense of who the bad guys, who the other sleeps are and what the bad guys’ ultimate goal is.  I guess they’re going to shoot the missiles at the United States, but that doesn’t seem like that big a deal.  Can’t Bucky  just call Iron Man or somebody to take the missiles down mid flight?  Through this entire series, there has been something missing – a sense of urgency, I suppose – and it hasn’t shown up yet.  I think this series and Bucky and Natasha as a team has limitless spy/mystery potential, but so far, I don’t feel it’s been realized.  The art is great, but it also lacks definition – I often have to review the same panel multiple times to understand it – specifically during which Bucky and Doom cut through the exterior wall at the U.N. to surprise Arkady and the Doombot to figure out that the Doombot was not fascinated by portrait of Doom hanging on the wall but actually saw the beginnings of the hole via the red circle.   This circle really could have used some sweetening to make it pop off the background.

Next time, we’ll see how this all turns out.  I have no idea what to expect, but I’m not getting my hopes up.
