Deadpool #54 Review

Deadpool #54

The all too human story arc comes to a resounding conclusion. Today I will be reviewing Deadpool #54. Please leave me a comment and let me know what you think.

Deadpool #54

So let’s talk about the book. Deadpool plans on running away with Bob in order to protect him from Tombstone. Before he can implement his plan, Tombstone arrives at his apartment and tries to kill Deadpool. Deadpool manages to escape with Bob and temporarily incapacitate Tombstone. They head to the train station but are tracked there by X-Force. In order to disguise themselves, the unmask and pose as regular people. When they finally engage X-Force, Deadpool manages to catch them by surprise and drop a few of them. Too bad he is outnumbered and gets trapped. He manages to convince Wolverine for a stay of execution so he can hide Bob, his only friend, and protect him from Tombstone. And that’s the book.

So let’s talk opinions. Now this is how a story arc should end. With a completely new direction for the main character. I love the ending in this issue as it really allows the story to go anywhere from this point on. There doesn’t have to be the same slapstick, goofy stories here. Now we can actually see Wade in action as a mercenary. As a regular person with a regular person’s vulnerabilities. Even Wolverine takes notice in his final comment to Wade. I’m very interested to see if that is the direction that this book will take instead of a quest for the return of Wade’s healing factor. I personally don’t want that. I want to see if this character has any value other than a joke. Now, with his new image, he will be able to explore a world of possibilities that the former Wade could not. He now realizes that dying for some woman is stupid so that was tremendous growth there. We can have a true romance develop. He can walk into any situation, without his costume, and still create the massive amount of havoc that he created before. I’m really happy at the way Daniel Way finally moved this character forward. He is no longer one note. He no longer can do the impossible. He now has to think and plan accordingly for all contingencies. He will be in self preservation mode a lot. Will this cause him to hesitate? Will this cause him to have fear? What if, even with his new image, he will still be rejected? How will he react to that? Does his lack of healing make him sane or is he still a nutjob? So many wonderful questions to explore. I really love the way this story arc ended. All the while being drawn with superbly consistent art. I can’t wait to see whats next on the Deadpool horizon and I haven’t felt this way in almost two years. Great work getting the interest back in this potentially incredible character. That’s my opinion folks. Take it or leave it.

What Daniel Way did took BALLS. Killing him would have been the easy way out, in retrospect.

I have been a comic collector and reader for 25 years. My major comic love is all things Marvel with the X-Men being at the top. I also dabble in anything and everything that catches my eye. Guess that makes me the "all over the place" reviewer. A title which I claim with pride. I am a happily married man of almost 10 years living in Brooklyn, NY with my wife and two amazing boys. I hope you enjoy my opinions and I look forward to reading and responding to any comments or criticisms.
