Wolverine and the X-Men #10 Review

Wolverine faces down Cyclops after the battle on Utopia. Bachalo tries to draw but fails once again. Today I will be reviewing Wolverine and the X-Men #10. Please leave a comment to let me know what you think.
Wolverine and the X-Men #10

So let’s talk about the book. First a recap of issue #9 which was so distorted and boring that I didn’t even bother to review it. Cap comes to Utopia to ask for Wolverine’s help to take down the X-Men because Phoenix is coming to Earth. Wolverine accepts. Gladiator sends the Death Commandos to kill Hope and anyone protecting her. He then decides to head for Earth himself. Onto this issue. Cyclops arrives in the school to talk to Wolverine to see if he’ll change sides and join the X-Men. Wolverine refuses. Other members of the team do not agree and decide to join Cyclops. The Death Commandos arrive on Earth. And that’s the book.

So let’s talk opinions. So as with most “event” tie-ins, last issue really had nothing to do with the AvX story other than a brief cameo. Other than that, it was just filled with character growth for everyone involved. As for this issue, there was a bit more connection to the “event” which made this issue a bit more necessary to read. I was hoping to get some action, but them I would probably be disappointed by my lack of ability to actually see and enjoy that action. Bachalo is now officially worse than Romita Jr. in my book and that is saying a lot. Everything the man draws looks more horrible than the last. He really has no ability to actually draw bodies or proportions or details. His faces are all completely off except once in a while he’ll have a moment of weakness and actually draw a good image like his Rachel Summers. In the page where she is talking about actually controlling the Phoenix, she looks marvelous. Everything else is off but Rachel looks really good. The colorist definitely needs to go too as his shadings and overlaps are just really distracting. At least Jason Aaron has a firm grip on the story. We really get a nice bit of tension between Wolverine and Cyclops. Emma and Kitty’s old rivalry is also brought across quite nicely. I love how Angel and Iceman stick to their original leader and friend and decide to go help him. That is fifty years of story coming back full circle. Genesis’ growth is nice as well. He will probably turn into Apocalypse at some point but for now, let his powers grow and friendships develop. I’m hoping next issue will feature some cool battles, as the action was kind of weak the last two issues. I think Bachalo will not be drawing that one so it will be awesome to see a Rulk/Iceman throwdown. Overall this is a great title. Unfortunately, until Bachalo is gone for good, I feel the title will never reach the greatness that it is fully capable of.  That’s my opinion folks. Take it or leave it.

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATING

Pros Cons
decent character development and nice tension building issue between Wolverine and Cyclops Bachalo has the artistic style of a kindergartener touching a crayon for the first time. (No insult intended to the kindergartener)

I have been a comic collector and reader for 25 years. My major comic love is all things Marvel with the X-Men being at the top. I also dabble in anything and everything that catches my eye. Guess that makes me the "all over the place" reviewer. A title which I claim with pride. I am a happily married man of almost 10 years living in Brooklyn, NY with my wife and two amazing boys. I hope you enjoy my opinions and I look forward to reading and responding to any comments or criticisms.
