Invincible Iron Man #521 Review

In The Invincible Iron Man #521, we get a glimpse of “The Future”…

Invincible Iron Man #521

Six months have passed since the Mandarin forced Tony Stark to his knees.  At Resilient, the company has soared in Tony’s absence.  As for the Hammers and their cohort at the Pentagon, General Babbage, Detroit Steel is in trouble.  So much so that Babbage has been forced out and takes the warrior’s exit by putting a bullet in his head.  The new Iron Man, Rhodey in disguise, is still busting up bad guys.  As Pepper gets close in her Rescue armor, he flies off.  Back at Mandarin City, Tony and a severely mentally depowered Ezekiel Stane are working on building Mandarin’s army of Titanomechs, but the two geniuses are plotting plans of their own.

Matt Fraction bounces back big time with this issue.  The last arc had so much going on it was difficult to read in a month by month basis.  This time, while there are things going on around the main plot, it’s a lot better paced.  We’re seeing the world six months later from the end of the last arc.  We’re checking in on people that surround Tony’s life, but the main story is how Stark plans to get free from the Mandarin.  One issue in might be a bit early to tell, but it definitely has more of a focused feel.  There’s no way to think there won’t be a few threads still out there around the Tony/Zeke story, but at least we can see the real focus will be in Mandarin City.

One thing I definitely liked was the relationship between Stane and Stark.  These two are bitter enemies, but the situation as it is, they are on the same side.  There’s even a nice sense of pity from Stark seeing what’s happened to Stane.  These two could potentially become very close friends, not just out of necessity, but out of common ground.  I definitely found those moments in this book to be written very nicely.

We might just be in the first part of this story, but it looks like we have a much better focused story as we’ve gotten the world around Tony mostly caught up and a lot of threads aren’t going to be as distracting as they were in the last arc.  I’m really looking forward to seeing what comes about in the relationship between Stark and Stane as they try to work their way out of Mandarin City.

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATING

Pros Cons
Seemingly much better focused story coming. Great character moments between Stark and Stane. Fantastic art from Salvador Larroca as always. Not too much to complain about. Solid first part to the new story.
