Invincible Iron Man #523 Review
Tony Stark may be down, but don’t think it’s totally the end of The Invincible Iron Man just yet!

Tony and Ezekiel have finished the first of the Mandarin’s Titanomechs. While Tony makes his final play to bring down his captor (by building a new Iron Man armor), Pepper Potts is surprised to find when she rips off the boot of this mysterious new Iron Man that it is being piloted by a black male. It leads her to wonder if Rhodey didn’t die after all. But if he didn’t, why would he and Tony fake his death? As she and Wyche begin digging around in Pepper’s Rescue armor’s J.A.R.V.I.S. memory banks, the armor comes alive and attacks the pair claiming to be “saving them”.
This arc has really been a treat. Matt Fraction returns after some shakier arcs to really pull a couple different stories together into a nicely intriguing and engaging story. Tony being able to pull his rogues together to fight against the Mandarin is solidly written. Having Pepper mirror our curiosity as to the real reason behind having a family man fake his own death builds a mystery for these final issues of this series. If there’s anything this issue, in particular, is doing is it feels as though it’s building to something big and exciting. It’s leaving me excited to turn the pages again.
I want to see why Rhodey’s faked death leads to the J.A.R.V.I.S. program to attempt violence against Pepper and Wyche. I’m dying to see Tony’s final assault against the Mandarin in what’s surely going to be a big battle between Tony and his former rogues against the Mandarin and his Titanomechs. This is a book that has brought me back around to being almost unwilling to wait for the next issue to come out!
